Inkwell Data / Split full names

Split full names into first and last

Turn a single "Full Name" column into First Name and Last Name. Middle names stay with the first name, so "Mary Ann Lee" becomes "Mary Ann" and "Lee". Save it as a recipe to run on next month's list.

How it works

Add your file and the split step opens with your name column already picked. It splits on the last space, so the last word becomes the last name and everything before it the first name. Check the preview, click Add step, then download.

Questions

What about names like "Smith, John"?

Use Split a column on a comma instead of a space, and name the parts Last Name and First Name.

Does it handle middle names?

Yes. Splitting from the right keeps everything except the last word together, so middle names stay with the first name.
