Look up any VIN, free.

Factory specs, safety recalls, owner complaints, crash-test ratings and fuel economy, pulled live from NHTSA and the EPA. Download it as a PDF or email it to anyone. Not a Carfax — and we’re upfront about exactly what that means.

What this tool pulls — and what it doesn’t

Everything here comes from free public government data. Some of what people want from a VIN lives in private or state databases that charge for access, so we don’t pretend to have it.

What you get, free

  • Factory specs. Year, make, model, trim, body, engine, transmission, drivetrain, assembly plant and factory safety equipment, decoded from the VIN by NHTSA.
  • VIN check. Whether the VIN is well-formed, whether its check digit adds up, and which country and manufacturer code it was issued under.
  • Safety recalls. Every NHTSA recall campaign issued for this year, make and model, with the risk and the free fix.
  • Owner complaints. Problems owners of the same year, make and model have reported to NHTSA, grouped by component.
  • Crash-test ratings. NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings for the model, where it was tested.
  • Fuel economy. EPA city/highway/combined MPG (or MPGe and range for EVs), annual fuel cost and CO₂.
  • Free checks to finish. Links to the official free checks we can’t run for you: NICB theft and total-loss, NHTSA open recalls on this exact VIN, and NMVTIS title records.

What this is not

  • Not a vehicle history report. This is not Carfax, AutoCheck or an NMVTIS report. Those are paid products built on private and state records we don’t have.
  • No title brands. We can’t tell you if a title is salvage, rebuilt, flood, junk or lemon-law buyback.
  • No odometer history. No past mileage readings, so no rollback check.
  • No accident or insurance claims. No crash reports, damage estimates or claim history.
  • No ownership, lien or use history. No owner count, loans, repossessions, or rental, fleet, taxi, rideshare or Turo use.
  • No auction records or photos. We don’t pull Copart, IAAI or Manheim listings. We give you search links that often surface them.
  • No theft status. We link you to NICB’s free check instead.
  • No personal information. No owner names, addresses or license-plate lookups. Those are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act.
  • Model-level, not this car. Recalls, complaints and ratings describe the year/make/model. They don’t confirm this vehicle had a problem, or that a recall was repaired.

Need title, odometer, accident or ownership history? That’s what a paid report is for: an official NMVTIS report costs a few dollars; Carfax and AutoCheck cost more and add service and accident records.

A smart, free order for checking a car

Whether it’s a used car, a former rental, a Turo listing or an auction vehicle, free checks catch most deal-breakers before you spend a dollar.

  1. Decode it hereConfirm the year, trim, engine and drivetrain match what the seller claims. Up-trimmed listings are common.
  2. Check recallsSee what’s been recalled for the model, then use NHTSA’s VIN search to see if any are still open on this car.
  3. Theft & total lossRun NICB’s free VINCheck for insurance write-offs and theft records.
  4. Search the VINOld auction listings and photos often surface with an exact-VIN search. Pay for a history report only if it passes.
